Learning Chemistry in Maths

Do you remember that horrible feeling in your stomach when you see the girl of your dreams talking to the school bully? You feel slightly sick as your stomach flips and a lump forms in your brain that you just can’t think around. Simon was feeling that for the first time right now.
Just an hour ago, Camilla had been sitting next to him in maths, smiling, laughing and tucking the hair that fell down her face back behind her ear. Simon was not very good at reading the signs but even to his uneducated eyes, she was flirting with him. Okay, she was only sitting next to him because Screwloose the Maths teacher had put her there, but surely these little giggles, ‘accidental’ touches and shy glances were more than just being friendly. Whatever, for a maths class Simon sure was learning a lot about chemistry.
But now he was learning a lesson in life, wondering how he could have ever believed that she might be interested in him. Camilla, lovely beautiful Camilla, with her perfect skin and smiling eyes. Of course she wouldn’t fancy him. Of course she'd be interested in the rugby team and not just anyone in the rugby team, it had to be Craig, the bruiser. Craig, the bastard who had given Simon a beating just for fun just two weeks ago.
Simon felt sick to the stomach watching Camilla repeat the gestures that he’d been convinced were unique for him. It was like watching a horror film, he longed to look away, to cover his face, to hide behind the sofa, but his eyes were glued to the events unfolding in front of him. Craig threw his head back in laughter, and then touched Camilla on the shoulder.
Anger grew inside Simon. He wanted to run over there and give the brute a beating, but Simon was a pragmatic boy, or more honestly he didn’t like pain and didn’t want another rugby team mauling. So he stayed where he was and felt his stomach twist and his eyes fill with water. Craig and Camilla seemed to be getting closer and closer like they were being drawn together by a magnet. Simon turned away, he really couldn’t face seeing them kiss.
As he walked away he heard a thwack, not  the sound of mouth on mouth but  the sound of hand on face.
‘Bitch!’
Simon turned around and saw Craig reeling, holding his face in real pain.
‘You leave Louise alone, she doesn’t want to speak to you. If you keep sending her text messages, then I’ll rip your bloody balls off.’ Camila said jabbing a finger in Craig’s chest.
Simon smiled, he was no closer to finding out if his love for her was requited but at least he knew he was hopeless at reading the signs.
