Despite being alone Jake laughed out loud when he saw the mirrored ceiling above the bed, he’d not been expecting that when he checked in to the only hotel in town 2 minutes before. The laugh turned into a guffaw when he saw the disco ball and lights above the desk. He hit the switch and his room was bathed in tiny coloured dots dancing on the wall. This was no ordinary hotel room; it was sleazy but somehow quaint. Maybe the padded walls were taking things a bit far but somehow it looked like it was all done with a knowing nod rather than a greasy grin.

This was no ordinary hotel room; it was sleazy but somehow quaint. Jake lay on the bed taking photos of himself in
the mirror and sending them to Kate. It would be a perfect room for them; they
were still in that stage of their relationship where sex was fun and regular
rather than predictable and routine. They would enjoy the corniness of the room rather than cynically pick holes in it.. Just a shame Kate was 100 miles away.
Jake suddenly felt incredibly lonely, he
dragged himself off the bed and readied himself to go to find something to eat.
It was cold outside and he didn’t know the town well. He’d have to find a place
to eat and then sit alone with his phone hoping the battery didn’t die.
Meanwhile he had the perfect room for Kate without a snowball’s chance in hell
of being able to use it.
He pulled his coat around him as he walked the
streets, the pizza place didn’t look very appealing but it was close, and open
and how far wrong could you go with a pizza?
Very was the answer to that. The pizza was
soggy, the pineapple mushy and the ham tasted like it was from the bins, even
the wine gave vinegar a bad name. Jake left half of the pizza
but still felt like he had a concrete ball trapped in his stomach. He walked
back to his ‘porn room’ even more down - this trip was turning into a nightmare.
Jake didn’t even try to connect to the
internet, he couldn’t bear to see the happy chatter on Facebook. So he just
sent Kate a text and then climbed into bed. He’d try to sleep away his
melancholy hoping he’d feel better in the morning. He checked his phone but
Kate hadn’t replied. He turned the volume off, knocked the light off and
snuggled down.
There was a gentle knock on the door, was he
dreaming or was it real? He listened closely, there it was again. He felt a
little scared, who would be knocking on his door at this time of night. He
turned the bedside light on and padded to the door. There was no peephole or
chain so there was no safe way of knowing who was on the other side. Maybe the
room came with a complimentary hooker or maybe it was the kind of place you
only stayed for an hour and he’d outstayed his welcome. He half thought about ignoring it, just going
back to bed but for some reason he decided to open the door and he was glad he
did. Because standing there wearing little more than a cheeky grin was his
lovely Kate.
He’d try to sleep away his melancholy hoping he’d feel better in the morning... I like this line. I hope for the same this night
