It had started out as one of those days, nothing really happening. I’d spent most of it pottering around in my pyjamas, doing a bit of work, reading one of my course books and drinking a gallon of tea. Seagulls had been squabbling on my roof for most of the day while the rain had been slightly less persistent but nonetheless still as audible. It was only about 5pm but it was already dark as night, the streetlights already earning their corn. I was just settling down to watch Pointless when my phone buzzed. I looked at it and smiled; a message from Lisa.
Lisa was a girl on my course, a pretty little thing, always a little giggle on her lips and a funny word to say. To be honest I didn’t think much of her poetry but she worked hard and helped me with the theory. If I’d been a bit younger I would be chasing Lisa but she was only 22; exactly half my age. I’d made a promise to myself to be nice to these youngsters but not to go chasing them. I didn’t want to get myself a reputation. So I was playing the disinterested older student, I knew they asked questions about me when I wasn’t around, 44, single, never married, I was an enigma to them and that was just fine by me.
‘Fancy coming over for Netflix and Chill,’ the message read. I wasn’t planning on going out, the night was dark and cold and I was cosy in my little flat, also I wasn’t a bit fan of movies and TV series, did I really want to watch Orange is the New Black  in somebody else’s flat? But Lisa was nice and I’d kind of promised myself not to go into my shell, to take opportunities to socialise. Yes I’d go, what harm would a movie and a cup of tea do, in fact it might be good to watch one of those TV shows, maybe it would be good to see what all the fuss was about.
‘That’d be great, what time and do you want me to bring anything?’ I texted back.
‘No, just you. Come over about 10.’
About 10? 10? That was my bedtime, the seagulls squawked on the roof and cars splashed outside. Did I really want to go out in 5 hours’ time?
I arrived at 10 exactly with a bottle of wine under my arm and a drip of rain at the end of my nose. It was Lisa’s flatmate who opened the door.
‘Hi, is Lisa in?’ I said.
‘In her room,’ the girl grunted pointing at a door.  I knocked gently and went in.
Lisa smiled at me from her bed, she was tucked up under the covers and I got the feeling the only thing she was wearing was that smile.
‘Hi,’ I said.
There was no sign of a TV or a computer; this didn’t look like a movie night. It was a typical student room; it smelt slightly of damp and cheap perfume, there were books and clothes strewn around the place including an odd stocking and the smallest pair of knickers I’d ever seen. There was a picture of Harry from One Direction on the wall, probably meant to be ironic but more than likely a teenage crush that gave her comfort. Teddy bears lay on the side of the bed and one had pride of place on the box that doubled as a bedside table.
‘Are you getting in or what then?’ Lisa said throwing the covers back revealing a perfectly naked body.  I was a little taken aback. I stood and stared at the white flesh in front of me.
‘I thought it was a movie night,’ I stuttered.
‘What?’ she said.
‘Netflix and chill,’ I quoted her text. She knelt up and started undressing me.
‘Get with the programme, Granddad. It’s slang for this, ’ she said unbuckling my jeans.
‘It is?’ I said but she didn’t answer. Instead she pulled me into bed and kissed me, placing my hands on her body as she did so.

I wasn’t complaining, it was a lovely evening but I had been looking forward to a bit of Orange is the New Black and a cup of tea.

Did you enjoy that? Put a smile on my face. Maggie's Milkman and Extraordinary Rendition are just £1.99 each. More details here.
