Grass Stains

“Hey Ed, you’ve got grass stains on your knees. What have you been up to?” Lewis said with a wink wink, nudge, nudge in his voice
The assembled crowd looked at my stained jeans and started babbling like school kids.
“And?” I said. After all, we were forty-something not fourteen and having grass stains on your jeans didn't mean what it used to mean.
“Come on spill the beans?” Ally said.
I sighed.
“I've been out with my nephews, I was running late and didn't have time to change.”
“Yeah, yeah,” said Lewis.
The more I argued, the less they believed me, so I just shut up and went to get a beer. I knew the truth, I didn't need to convince them.
“Where’s Kay?” I said when I got back. The others shrugged.
Bonnie looked at her phone. “No messages to say she’s not coming,” she said. I sat down, trying not to let my disappointment show. I found myself looking at the door every time I heard it open. I was like an abandoned dog outside a supermarket.
I was on my third pint before she walked in. That smile on her face that always made my blood pressure rise. She didn't look at me, but I knew she'd seen me. I wondered why she was so late, after all, she was still wearing the same dress she’d had on earlier.
“Kay,” Lewis said, “Let me get you a drink.” I knew Lewis had a thing for Kay, I guess we all had a thing for Kay.
“No, it’s okay, I’ll get my own.”  She smiled at me and turned to go to the bar. Everyone around the table saw the grass stain on her backside, digested it, and then looked at me. I blushed; they didn’t have to say anything, they had me banged to rights.
