Midnight Flit

Lewis opened the door and slipped out quietly, closing it with care behind him so as not to wake Marie. Long, tearful goodbyes were best avoided; a midnight flit was a much better option, well for him at least. For Marie? Well, she’d get over it and he’d be back before too long anyway.  For now he’d got what he came for. Marie was a great cook, a great lover and a great talker. The food and sex were perks of the job, but the talk was his meat and drink.
He scuttled down the street, trying to slow himself down; walking too fast at this time of night would arouse suspicion. He had to be just another love cheat leaving his lover and heading back to his wife. It was partly true; he was a love cheat.
He reached the corner of the road and stopped to catch his breath; the cold weather always took his breath away. He turned right and walked up the street. He heard the car engine start up. Perfect timing! The car moved slowly towards him, the headlights coming on as it approached. Lewis opened the door and slipped in quietly. He was happy to be out of the cold and out of harm’s way.
Thy drove in silence. The reflections of the streetlights repeatedly passing in the window reminded Lewis of late night childhood drives home from Granny Wilson’s. They’d go past her old house any minute now on the way to the cottage -  where the unGranny like Lev would be waiting.
Lewis wanted to let the motion rock him to sleep, but it was only an hour’s drive and he needed to organise his thoughts and prepare for the grilling. Lev could be a prick at times; last time he’d threatened to break Lewis’ face for forgetting a date one of the other women had told him. Lewis wasn’t going to make the same mistake twice.
He ran the details of Marie’s stories over and over in his mind. She was a hell of a gossip and he was a trained listener.
Lewis’ saw the one light burning bright as they approached the cottage, he could picture Lev sitting there, vodka bottle at his side; recording machines idle, silently waiting for his guest. Lewis shifted in his seat and took a deep breath; this was always the worse time, the time when awful butterflies invaded his stomach and stupid doubts crept into his mind. Lewis didn’t mind admitting that Lev scared the shit out of him.
He crunched up the path, he opened the door and slipped in quietly. The house was unusually quiet, something was missing - the clink of glass or the crack of ice. Lewis walked down the hall and into the office.
Either Lev had had a sex change or there was something seriously wrong. Marie smiled at him.
‘So this is where you got to,’ she said. Lewis enjoyed her smiled knowing it would be the last time he’d see it.  He didn’t need to look around to know he was surrounded by armed men. He bowed his head and let them apprehend him,

‘Take him,’ Marie said. She didn’t like long, tearful goodbyes.
