Claudie smiled as she greeted her
friend Silvie. To the casual observer the smile looked genuine enough, but that
was because Claudie was a good actor. Only she knew that the smile was as fake
as Radiohead's watering can.
Silvie smiled back trying to read her friend's face. Trying to find out if the smile was real or not? It looked real but there was something that Silvie couldn't put her finger on, but something that set alarm bells ringing in her mind nonetheless.
They airkissed loudly and settled down to gossip.
Claudie watched Silvie as she spoke. Could it really be true? Could this woman who had been Claudie's friend since school really be sleeping with Eric? No surely not, surely it was impossible, Claudie didn't want to believe it, but all the evidence said it was true.
Silvie watched Claudie as she listened, did she know? Had she finally seen what had been staring her in the face for so long? Had she finally added two and two to make four?

Again to the casual observer they
looked like two friends shooting the breeze, but look closely and you’d see
their body language was all wrong, Claudie sitting at 45 degrees to the table,
her legs crossed, her body tense like a force field, while Silvie looked
everywhere but straight ahead, avoid the accusing eyes of her friend.
Their conversation was like riding
the dodgems; they skirted around, avoiding the issue but both desperate to
crash into it head on, despite the warning not to. Claudie was desperate to
know. To have her suspicions confirmed, while Silvie just wanted to stop the hiding,
to have it all out in the open.
Finally Claudie could take no more,
she lined up her car and headed straight for the side of Silvie’s. She pressed
the metal to the floor and with hatred in her eyes and steel in her voice her
question crashed into an off-guard Silvie.
Claudie wanted to run away before
the answer came, before Silvie could recover her composure and line up for a
revenge shot.Claudie’d asked the question but she really didn’t want to know
the answer.
But Silvie had spun her car around,
and was now hurtling towards Claudie.
Boom, the answer took the wind out
of Claudie, made her body shake with the force and then sit lifeless as she
struggled to regain her composure. The ride had ended, it was time to get off the
dodgems.
